About the School
Hiroshima Saniku Gakuin is a private Christian
co-educational boarding institution of secondary education, whose
educational philosophy stresses the harmonious development of man's physical,
mental, and spiritual powers.
The school is comprised of a Junior High school and a
Senior High school. It is owned and
operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and is a part of a
nation-wide system of Adventist schools. Other SDA schools in Japan
include: 5 kindergartens, 10 elementary schools, 2 junior high schools, and
one college. These schools are part of a world-wide system of schools
operated by the church - the largest Protestant education system in the
world.
Hiroshima Saniku Gakuin offers a unique style of
student life, partly because it is a boarding institution with students
coming from all over Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, and partly because it
remains small enough (approx. 500 students) to retain something of a family
atmosphere. As well as promoting academic excellence, Hiroshima Saniku
Gakuin encourages its students to participate in the physical, social and
spiritual elements of life which combine to make up a balanced education.
Hiroshima Saniku Gakuin is also accredited by the
Prefectural Board of Education as a school catering for Japanese returnees,
providing them with a smooth transition back to a Japanese educational
system.
Philosophy
The basic philosophy of the school can perhaps be best described
in these words:
True education means more than
the pursual of a certain course of study. It means more than a
preparation for the life that now is. It has to do with the whole
being, and with the whole period of existence possible to man. It is
the harmonious development of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual
powers. It prepares the student for the Joy of service in the world
and for the higher joy of wider Service in the world to come.
E.G. White, Education, p. 13.
One of Hiroshima Saniku Gakuin's philosophical assumptions is that every
human being is endowed with power to think and to do. The school's aim is
therefore to emphasize learning and help its students reach the highest
intellectual level, to enable them to think critically and serve the
communities of which they will ultimately become a part.
Spiritual Education
Because Hiroshima Saniku Gakuin is a Seventh-day Adventist Christian
school, spiritual education is part of the core curriculum and
compulsory for all students. To become part of the character, these
spiritual values are combined with practical experience through
worship, prayer meetings, Bible camps, involvement in community work,
charity concerts and even voluntary service abroad in conjunction with
ADRA, the Seventh-day Adventist Development and Relief Agency. Through
these practical experiences students are thus encouraged to believe
that all their powers belong to God, and that they are to live to bless
others, and to give God and humanity their best service.
Physical Education
At
the senior high level, all students are required to do 8 hours a week of
practical physical work at one of the school's campus services or
industries. This work program is an integral part of the school
curriculum. It has been demonstrated that this work experience not only
invigorates the physical powers but also tends to help students to do
better academically. It also creates mutual trust and understanding, and
strengthens relationships between students and teachers, as the faculty
work alongside the students.
All students take an active part in club activities. The
clubs presently offered are the Sign Language Club, Marionette Club,
Basketball Club, Baseball Club, Softball Club, Volleyball Club, Soccer
Club, Tennis Club, Badminton Club, Archery Club, and Wandervogel Club.
The dormitory at Hiroshima Saniku Gakuin doesn't only function as a
boarding facility, it plays an integral part of the school's philosophy
of education. Its aim is to foster rich human relationships, and teach
students to live together in harmony.
